Sociology Week 5

Week Five Thursday 09/27/18
By: Maddie Gums
Today in sociology we discussed multiple different topics including Socialization-Human Development, Super-ego, and Peer group. Socialization human development is a lifelong social experience by which individuals develop human potential and learn patterns of their culture. Socialization prepares people to participate in a social group by teaching them its norms and expectations. Socialization has three goals within it which include; The teaching of impulse control and developing a conscious, preparing individuals to perform specific social roles, and using shared sources of meaning and value. Superego is part of Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytic theory of psychology. The superego is the part of the mind that acts as the critical conscience, it reflects social standards learned through life. Psychoanalysis is a psychological theory developed by Sigmund Freud that is set to treat mental disorders by studying the interaction between conscious and unconscious elements in a person. This also works to bring repressed thoughts into mind, and uses techniques like interpretation of the dreams, and free association. Free association is when a client is sitting there talking to Freud and talking about every single little thing that comes to their mind. Freud tended to only study people who were sick, not healthy people. A peer group is a group of people whose members have interests, social position, and age in common.

One thing I can do to benefit myself and society is realizing that some people are not open to talking about how they are feeling, and honestly some people don’t even know when something is bothering them. So, if someone is having a bad day I and being rude I should take into consideration that they might have a lot going on. This will benefit me because it will cause me to get less worked up over people, and this will benefit society because I won’t be fighting anyone.

One thing I can do to negatively impact myself and society is by not taking into consideration that some people do not have a good home life or a good life in general. Some people may be living meal to meal and check to check so if I do not take these things into consideration this will make me feel bad because I am not donating to people who need it and im dealing with other crabby people. This will impact society because if no one Is willing to help the less fortunate then who will ever help them?

One thing society can to positively impact me is by providing me with more opportunities to help people in need. When I am helping people, it makes me feel really good and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

One thing society can do to negatively impact me is by not providing opportunities for the less fortunate to be helped by the community.

A solution  is to provide schools with more posters, send out emails and even put ads of websites for help cooking food, or even fundraising for the people in need.

Sociology Week 5

Week Five Tuesday 9/25/18
By: Maddie Gums
On Tuesday during class we watched a video talking about various cultures around the world and how modern society is impacting them. Another big topic that periodically comes up in class is gender, sociobiology, and gender roles. The definition of gender is the state of being male or female and this is typically used in reference to social and cultural differences in modern society and not biological ones. Some people are biologically male but will identify themselves as female in society. Sociobiology is the scientific study of biological (especially ecological, and evolutionary) views of social behavior in animals and humans. Sociologists agree that human behavior as well as some non-human behavior can be explained partially as the outcomes of natural selection. They claim that in order for behavior to be understood it must be analyzed within the terms of evolution. Gender roles still play a decently big role in our society today, some may even say the roles are reversing. You’ll always hear the terms “women belong in the kitchen and men should be making the money.”. But times are changing and now in 2018 less than 17% of moms are being stay at home moms and more of them are working at regular jobs. But nowadays men are tending to stay home which was unheard of 50 years ago.

One thing I can do to benefit myself and society is by promoting women to follow their dreams whether it be being a stay at home mom, or if it is going and working a job. This will benefit me because it will make me feel happy to encourage people, and this will help society because it will have people who actually want to work work.

One thing I can do to negatively impact myself and society is by being against the fact that gender roles in modern society are not a problem. If I ignore the fact that some people think I shouldn’t be able to work or drive or provide for myself it would degrade how I feel about myself. This would be bad for society because if someone doesn’t start fixing the problem no one ever will think of women as equal.

One thing society can do to positively impact me is by making women and men have to be paid equal amounts and by working with the people to show that times have changed, and women can do the things men do vice versa. This will make women and men feel better about where they are placed in society.

One thing society can do to impact me in a negative way is by not taking into consideration that women’s rights are very important to many people and that they must start taking into consideration that these views need to be addressed.

A solution to not having equal rights among genders would be by providing more gender equality and gender studies classes to people whether it be in high school or even to adults for a low cost or even free.

Chapter 5 Questions:
1: What is the most important step of self development?
2: Can social isolation kill someone?
3: What stage of life has the most conflict for most people?

Sociology Week 4

Week Four Thursday 9/20/2018
By: Maddie Gums
During class on Thursday we discussed what norms are and how they differ from society to society. For example, a norm for us in America to sit on our phones while we eat dinner, but in a culture like Europe doing that would be considered highly inappropriate and disrespectful. Another topic we discussed is high culture compared to popular culture, high culture is what distinguishes the society’s elite from other aspects of the society. While popular culture are latter cultural patterns that are wide spread among most of a society’s population and not just one specific group of people. A topic we talked about in class that I found very interesting is multiculturalism. I find multiculturalism interesting because it is an educational program that recognizes multiple different parts of cultural diversity in the United States and promotes equality among everybody. I think this is very important and should be implemented more into our modern school system so the children growing up in the society we live in can appreciate out “melting pot” and the rich culture that everyone brings to it. Learning about the people that we interact with on a daily basis can make our interactions with the various people we meet more pleasant and enriching to our lives if we know a little bit about various cultures around us.

Definitions:
Norm: Rules and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members.
High Culture: The former cultural patterns that distinguishes a society’s elite.
Multiculturalism: An educational program recognizing past and present cultural differences past and present cultural diversity in US society and promoting the equality of all cultural traditions.

One thing I can do to benefit myself and society is by promoting multiculturalism among my children, and the people I interact with on a daily basis. This will benefit me because I will learn from the people around me, and this will benefit society because it will be me teaching people about why learning about other cultures is awesome.

One thing I can do to negatively impact myself and society is by ignoring the norms of my culture, and the norms of the cultures I visit. If I went to Europe and did not plan to stay for dinner for three hours that would be seen as rude. This would negatively impact me because I would have people looking down on me and the society I am from because everyone would know I am American.

One thing society can do to impact me in a positive way Is by offering more free events promoting the learning of our culture and its origin this would be positive because it would bring me closer with the community around me and it is good for society to have people learning more about it.

One thing society can do to impact me in a negative way is by ignoring the fact that it is good to learn about multiculturalism. This would be bad for me because it would not give me the opportunity to learn about the people around me. This would be bad for society because this would cause some people to be very wary about other people because they would not know about them.

A Solution to society not promoting multiculturalism is by the people within the society who believe in teaching about multiculturalism coming together and organizing free events for everyone to teach with various activities and speaches about why this is important.
