Week 6 Thursday 10/4/18
By: Maddie Gums
During class on Thursday we
continued to discuss chapter 6. In chapter 6 we discussed role set, role strain, and role exit. Role set is when there is
conflict among rules corresponding to two or more statuses. Can be reduced by
compartmentalizing our lives. Role strain is tension among the roles connected
to a single status. Role exit is the process by which people disengage from
important social roles. An example of role set is a student who interacts with
different people like teachers, other students, and counselors during the
school year while yet remaining a student and having to change how they talk
based on who they are interacting with. An example of role strain is the fact
that me a student may be having a hard time keeping up in school. An example of
role exit is if a teacher were to retire or to leave being a teacher for
another job. Another term we discussed is Social Construct of Reality. The
Social Construct of reality is the process by which individuals creatively
shape reality through social interaction. An example of social construct of
reality is if a man spent more money on his pets per week than a minimum wage
worker made per week. If the minimum wage worker thought “how can one spend
this much money on their animals?”
One thing I can
do to benefit myself and society is by remembering that everyone has a
different social construct of reality, and that everyone is not going to see
things the same way that I tend to see things. This will benefit me because it
will allow me to have many different views of the people around me. It also
will benefit society because it will make me a person who is not as rude to
other people.
One thing I can
do to negatively impact myself and society is by judging people for the views
they have since not everyone is going to have the same views as me because we
are all raised differently and taught different views. This is bad because it
would make me a very narrow one minded person and it would make it hard for me
to learn about other people.
One thing society
can do to positively impact me is by teaching people/showing people more that
not everyone is supposed to have the same views in life because we are all
raised differently for specific reasons.
One thing society
can do to negatively impact me is by not allowing people to express the different
views they have in their life.
A Solution is to start showing kids when they are at a
young age about diversity and that all people are not meant to be the same.
Chapter 10 Questions:
- What is an example of social recidivism?
- Is rehabilitation mostly used for drug charges?
