Sociology Week 2

Week Two Thursday 9/6/18
During class on Thursday we discussed dramaturgical analysis which is at a micro level social interaction, that explains how people live their lives much like actors who are performing on a stage. Dramaturgical analysis is an idea that people’s day to day lives can be understood like performers in action performing in theater. Another thing we learned about was the social exchange paradigm, this takes place at the micro level of society and social interaction is guided by what each person stands to gain or lose from others. The social exchange theory was developed by George Homans and Peter Blau along with John Thibaut and Harold Kelley who were both social psychologists. Another topic we talked about in class was symbolic-interaction analysis which is a school of thought that works to explain social behavior along the terms of how people interact with each other. In this school of thought social structures are best understood in terms of individual interactions. Another important topic we discussed in class is structural analysis which provides framework for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together in order to promote solidarity and stability. Herbert Spencer and Robert Merton were important contributors to the structural functional analysis theory. With this we also discussed how it can be divided into 3 sub-paradigms including; manifest function, dysfunction and latent function.

One thing I can do to benefit myself and society is by using social media only for positive reasons, and not being mean, and dragging other people down while I am using social media. By purely using social media for pleasure and enjoyment and not for angrily coming at people it will benefit me by making me feel good about using social media to uplift people and benefit society by me not allowing myself to fall into the category of a cyber bully. This is the second time I have talked about this, but it is a topic that is very important to me.

One thing I can to negatively impact society is by using social media as a platform to drag people down and bring negativity into the world where we need positivity. This would negatively impact
society because I would then fall into the category of “cyber bully” and that would not look good for myself or for the human society as a whole.

One thing society can do to affect me in a positive way is by regulating more of what goes on in the social media networking. I don’t mean I want the government wasting their time looking through tweets, but I think as a society as a whole we should really be watching out for each other on social media. Such as sticking up for each other on social media and helping regulate what we see. For example, I do not want to see videos of people harming themselves nor other people, and I think more people should be reporting content on social media like that.
One thing society can do to impact me in a negative way is by not allowing me or anyone around me to express who they are and give their opinions on anything. I feel like the freedom we have during this time period is awesome and if the government or society took that away from me it would cause me to lose my sense of self and my true “individualistic” feeling I have about myself.

A solution to the problems of what Is being regulated on social media is to not follow certain accounts but now social media sights like twitter will put content from other accounts up onto your timeline without you even asking or wanting them on there. So, by twitter stopping that trend and by closely regulating who I follow I feel like I could fix my problem but with various retweets and “Your friend liked this post” it is getting harder and harder to do that. So if twitter would take these away it might make some people’s lives much better.

Chapter 2 Questions:
1.     How is validity used in sociology?
2.     Are income, occupation, or education used to measure anything else other than to determine social class?
3.     In normal words what is Deductive Reasoning?
